Message tone: negative
About the message: This is one of two negative mailers Republican candidate Candace Gould recently sent about her Democratic opponent, David Simon, a former state parks director. This one accuses Simon of trying to use federal stimulus money to create a horse sanctuary. In 2010, then-Gov. Bill Richardson suggested using $2.8 million in stimulus money to buy property to create a sanctuary for wild horses. But the plan was withdrawn amid criticism. Gould and Simon are competing for the Senate District 10 seat to replace outgoing state Sen. John Ryan, a Republican.
The messenger's money: Gould is paying McCleskey Media Strategies for her printing and mailing services. That firm is owned by Jay McCleskey, adviser to GOP Gov. Susana Martinez, and it also does work for Susana PAC and the super PAC Advance New Mexico Now.
