Message tone: negative
About the message: This is one of two negative mailers Republican candidate Candace Gould recently sent about her Democratic opponent, David Simon, a former state parks director and regional director for the National Parks Conservation Association. This flier alleges that Simon tried to block construction of the Paseo Del Norte interchange as an "environmental extremist." The allegation appears to date back to 1998, when the National Parks Conservation Association and other groups opposed extending the road through Petroglyph National Monument. Ultimately, those opponents, including Simon, succeeded in changing the Paseo Del Norte route to avoid the petroglyphs. Gould and Simon are competing for the Senate District 10 seat to replace outgoing state Sen. John Ryan, a Republican.
The messenger's money: Gould is paying McCleskey Media Strategies for her printing and mailing services. That firm is owned by Jay McCleskey, adviser to GOP Gov. Susana Martinez, and it also does work for Susana PAC and the super PAC Advance New Mexico Now.
